- Start the layering: Switch those shorts and T shirts at home, to sweat pants and sweatshirts. Comfort doesn’t have to be compromised, it only has to be adjusted to the weather. Even something as simple as putting on a pair of socks around the house can help you stay warm! (Not to mention, it’s great for the hardwood too!
- Use space heaters: It’s been said a lot of times, so it must be true! Space heaters save BIG on energy costs. You don’t need to be heating your entire house, if you’re only using two rooms at night. Invest in a small room heater, and get yourself by during chilly nights in early fall.
- Keep the fan on: Yep, you heard it! I know it’s getting cold, but your fan can serve a dual purpose. Face it upward, and it will help circulate the air in the room, moving the hot air down.
- Use the throw blankets: You might have put them on your couch as a fashion statement, but throw blankets are really warm, and can help keep you cozy on the couch. Sip a mug of tea and watch your favorite shows wrapped un in the warmth and comfort that is a lot more than just a show piece.
- Toasting by the oven: When you’re finished cooking, or baking, leave the oven door open to let it cool. The preexisting heat is meant to cool down, and what better way, than to heat up the rest of the kitchen.
- Close the drafts: Seal up and windows and door that are letting the cold air in. You also need to make sure you have closed the fireplace damper when your fireplace isn’t in use. A fault air escape in the house can add the winter chill to your home, long before winter has even arrived!
- Let the sun shine in: Open all window coverings and allow the house to soak in the sun. Natural light and solar energy is the best heat source available. Your house and absorb the heat and hold it in for you, as long as you let it. Take advantage of the extended daylight hours in early fall, and make the most of the natural heat.
Don’t let winter sneak up on your this year without a fight! You know you’ll eventually have to give in to the cold, but while the weather allows it, save big on energy costs by keeping the furnace off for as long as you can! Simple changes around the house will allow for an extended lease on comfort. And remember, there aren’t that many months where you won’t need air conditioning or heating! Make the most of the coming weeks, and spend more time enjoying the fall, than worrying about the winter to come.
Here's to apple pies and beautiful fall leaves!
Cheers
